Virginia is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the "Virgin Queen" because she never married or had children. The English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh named the area "Virginia" in honor of the queen when he established the first English colony there in 1585. The name has been used ever since to refer to the region.
